Common Question: Which Bricks Should a Hot Metal Ladle Lining Use?
Hot metal ladles (also called iron ladles or torpedo cars) carry molten iron between blast furnaces and steelmaking shops. The lining works under 1400–1500℃ molten iron, slag attack, iron stream impact and frequent thermal cycling during tilting. Buyers often ask: "Which bricks are best for hot metal ladle linings? Why are high-alumina bricks used less and less?"
The short answer: the lining faces combined wear modes — erosion, slag attack and thermal shock — and single-material conventional bricks can't handle all of them. Al₂O₃-SiC-C bricks were designed exactly for this duty.
1. Why Al2O3-SiC-C Bricks for Hot Metal Ladles
Al₂O₃-SiC-C bricks use high-alumina bauxite clinker or fused alumina as aggregate, add silicon carbide (SiC) and carbon (graphite), and are bonded with resin — a composite of "high-alumina skeleton + SiC reinforcement + carbon phase":
- SiC: improves slag non-wetting behavior and erosion/abrasion resistance — exactly what the slagline zone needs;
- Carbon: is not wetted by molten iron or slag, sharply reducing slag attack, and improves thermal shock resistance (carbon's high conductivity and low expansion buffer temperature impact);
- High-alumina skeleton: provides refractoriness under load and structural strength.
Net effect: slag resistance, molten-iron erosion resistance, thermal shock spalling resistance and abrasion resistance — covering all three major failure modes of ladle linings.
2. Key Properties to Check
| Property | Typical Range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Al₂O₃ | 50%–70% | Higher = better temperature and strength |
| SiC | 8%–20% | Higher = better slag/erosion resistance, higher cost |
| Carbon (C) | 8%–15% | Key for slag resistance and thermal shock |
| Bulk density | ≥2.6 g/cm³ | Degree of densification |
| Apparent porosity | ≤16% | Lower = better penetration resistance |
| CCS (room temp.) | ≥40 MPa | Structural strength base |
| Max service temp. | 1500–1650℃ | Covers ladle duty |
*Al₂O₃/SiC ratios vary by zone (wall, bottom, slagline, impact area) — refer to each supplier's grade table.*
3. Zone-by-Zone Selection
A ladle lining is not "one brick for everything":
- Slagline zone: higher SiC grades for slag resistance;
- Upper wall / impact area: higher Al₂O₃, higher strength grades against iron erosion and mechanical impact;
- Bottom: combined with the permanent lining, balancing erosion resistance and insulation;
- Rim / top edge: grades with good thermal shock resistance.
4. How to Evaluate a Supplier
- Raw material control: graded calcined bauxite, stable SiC grade — determine brick uniformity;
- Forming & heat treatment: high-pressure pressing (≥1000 t press) and controlled curing protect density and carbon phase from oxidation;
- Testing capability: full factory data on bulk density, apparent porosity, CCS and refractoriness under load;
- Special-shape capability: ladle rims and curved slagline segments are mostly special shapes — check mold development and non-standard production ability;
- Service response: drawing-based brick layout and installation guidance.
5. Henan Songrui Recommendation
- Working linings of hot metal ladles & torpedo cars: Al₂O₃-SiC-C bricks first, with zone-specific Al₂O₃/SiC ratios;
- Slagline under severe attack: consider upgrading to MgO-C or Al-Mg-C brick systems;
- Special shapes & preforms: Henan Songrui supports custom production per drawing to reduce on-site cutting loss.
