Brick Laying & Joint Control Essentials

Joints are the weak point of a lining: too wide they leak gas and slag, too narrow they fail to absorb expansion. Master joint thickness, staggering and expansion joints for long life.

Laying quality directly decides lining tightness and life. Joint control comes first: high-temperature furnaces usually require joints ≤2 mm (≤1 mm at critical zones), medium/low-temperature furnaces 2–3 mm. Oversized joints let gas and slag penetrate — a leading cause of early failure.

Lay in staggered courses so vertical joints never align; install shaped and curved bricks by number for tight fit. Mortar must match the brick: high-alumina mortar for high-alumina brick, silica mortar for silica, magnesia mortar for magnesia — and check joint fullness to ensure dense beds.

Expansion joints are equally critical: calculate width and spacing from the brick’s expansion coefficient and furnace temperature, and place them away from load-bearing structures. Cold-state laying must reserve expansion allowance, or bricks will crush each other during heat-up.
