High-Alumina Bricks in High-Temperature Furnaces

High-alumina brick is among the most widely used shaped refractories. Understand the Al₂O₃ content–performance relationship to pick the right grade for stoves, furnaces and more.

High-alumina bricks are graded by Al₂O₃ content — LZ-48, LZ-55, LZ-65, etc. Higher content brings higher refractoriness-under-load, slag resistance and hot strength, along with higher cost.

LZ-55 and LZ-65 are the workhorses: hot-stove walls and checker zones, reheating-furnace walls and roofs, coke-oven ends and cement-kiln transition zones. Special grades serve harsh conditions: low-creep high-alumina (hot-stove high-temperature zones), spalling-resistant high-alumina (with ZrO₂ or fiber for thermal-shock zones) and phosphate-bonded high-alumina (high hot strength).

Selection points: (1) match refractoriness-under-load 50–100℃ above service; (2) prefer spalling-resistant or corundum grades in high-alkali, high-erosion conditions; (3) verify apparent porosity and bulk density for adequate density.
