High-Alumina vs Fireclay Brick: Differences and Selection
1. The Fundamental Difference
Fireclay brick is made mainly from refractory clay (hard-clay grog) with Al₂O₃ of 30–48%, composed mainly of mullite and glass phase; high-alumina brick is made from bauxite clinker with Al₂O₃≥48%, composed mainly of mullite and corundum. The Al₂O₃ difference fundamentally sets temperature rating and slag resistance.
2. Key Performance Comparison
Refractoriness: fireclay ~1610–1750℃ (generally 1710℃); high-alumina rises from 1770℃ to above 1790℃ with Al₂O₃. RUL: fireclay ~1300–1400℃; high-alumina 1400–1550℃ and above. 4. Selection Decision Points
Three steps: ① temperature—above 1300–1400℃ or heavy load favors high-alumina; medium-low zones fireclay suffices; ② slag—basic/iron slag or strong gas scouring favors high-alumina; ③ cost—fireclay costs roughly half of high-alumina; prefer it when duty permits for best value. "Use fireclay when it works; step up to high-alumina only when fireclay cannot hold" is the basic selection logic.
5. Combined Use
The two often combine in one furnace by zone: upper BF stack in fireclay with lower stack in high-alumina; lower hot stoves in fireclay with domes in high-alumina or low-creep grades. Brick shapes can be standardized across both for easy masonry and replacement.
