Refractory Brick Classification & Selection Guide

Fireclay, high-alumina, silica, magnesia, corundum… eight brick families each have strengths. Match temperature, atmosphere and chemical attack for long lining life.

Refractory bricks fall into eight families by chemistry: fireclay (1300–1400℃), high-alumina (1400–1550℃), silica (above 1600℃, acid-slag resistant), magnesia and MgO-C (alkaline-slag resistant, high temperature), corundum (1700℃ class), mullite (excellent thermal-shock resistance), SiC (abrasion and erosion resistant) and lightweight insulating bricks.

Three selection principles: (1) temperature — choose a grade rated 50–100℃ above actual service; (2) atmosphere and media — magnesia for alkaline slag, silica for acid slag, corundum/SiC for heavy abrasion; (3) structure — working, insulating and permanent layers serve different functions and must not be mixed.

Also check physical data: lower apparent porosity means stronger erosion resistance, refractoriness-under-load reflects hot strength, and thermal-shock resistance determines life under cycling. Require batch test reports and verify dimensional tolerances.
