How to Choose High Alumina Bricks: What Working Conditions Do LZ-48/55/65 Grades Match?

The question buyers ask most often

"High alumina bricks come in LZ-48, LZ-55 and LZ-65 - which grade should I buy?" This is the most common question in high alumina brick procurement. The grade is determined by Al₂O₃ content, which directly affects refractoriness, refractoriness under load and thermal shock resistance. Choosing a higher grade than needed adds cost; choosing a lower grade shortens service life. This article explains the differences and how to select by working conditions.

Key differences between LZ-48/55/65

High alumina bricks are graded by Al₂O₃ content per the national standard. Higher content generally means higher refractoriness and refractoriness under load, and higher cost:

The values above are common reference ranges; always rely on the supplier's test report for final values.

How to select the right grade

Step 1 - service temperature and load. For long-term use below 1350°C with light load, LZ-48 is enough. For working linings at 1350-1500°C, choose LZ-55. For higher temperatures with load, choose LZ-65 or above.

Step 2 - thermal shock and wear. For parts with large temperature fluctuation or frequent start-stop cycles, evaluate thermal shock resistance and consider spalling-resistant high alumina bricks. For parts with strong material abrasion, prioritize grades with high density and low porosity.

Step 3 - media attack. For parts contacting slag, alkali or sulfur, higher Al₂O₃ content usually means better erosion resistance, but balance it with thermal shock performance to avoid "erosion-resistant but spalling-prone" linings.

Typical applications by furnace

  • Hot blast stove checker and lining: usually LZ-55 or above; LZ-65 for key hot zones.
  • Blast furnace bosh and stack: select by comprehensive conditions; high alumina bricks and Al₂O₃-SiC-C bricks are often combined.
  • Cement rotary kiln transition zone: high alumina or spalling-resistant high alumina bricks, balancing temperature and thermal shock.
  • Aluminium melting furnace lining: LZ-55/LZ-65 for zones in contact with molten aluminium.
  • General boilers, ducts and heat-equipment linings: LZ-48 is sufficient and more cost-effective.

How high alumina brick fits among other bricks

High alumina brick is an alumina-silica shaped refractory between fireclay brick and corundum brick: more heat-resistant and stronger than fireclay brick, lower cost than corundum brick. Compared with basic bricks such as magnesia carbon brick, high alumina brick is neutral-to-acidic and suits conditions without strong basic slag reaction. Always define the media and temperature first instead of simply choosing the highest grade.

How to evaluate a supplier

  1. Test report verification: request reports on Al₂O₃ content, refractoriness, refractoriness under load, apparent porosity and cold crushing strength, and compare them with the grade standard.
  2. Size tolerance and appearance: dimensional deviation directly affects masonry quality; ask for the tolerance range.
  3. Raw material stability: bauxite clinker quality determines product stability; check raw material source and batch consistency.
  4. Condition-matching advice: a professional supplier asks about the service location, temperature and media before recommending a grade, rather than pushing the highest content.

Hot metal ladle (torpedo car) linings face molten iron erosion, slag attack and severe thermal shock — ordinary high-alumina and fireclay bricks fail quickly.
